Bargain of the Day

I'm SO depressed! I wanted this. Why just the other day a vampire rang my front doorbell and tried to deliver the mail.

United States: You never know what might sneak up on you this Hallowe'en but one anonymous buyer is safe, though $12,000 poorer. On Thursday, Sotherby's in New York sold an early 20th century vampire killing kit- a walnut box containing a wooden stake, a pistol with 10 silver bullets, a crucifix, a rosary and containers for garlic powder and other useful substances.

A label on the kit says: This box contains the items considered necessary for persons who travel into certain little known countries of Eastern Europe where the populace are plagued with a particular manifestation of evil known as Vampires.

Techno Maging - The Full Story

"When called by a panther, don't anther" - Ogden Nash

Maybe I should have listened. As wonderful as the new Panther operating system is for macs, the server version should come with a big warning label that says "Caution - This Product Could Blow Away All Of Your Server Configurations - Leading to heart palpitations, dangerous behavior, and sleep disorders."

The plan - replace ancient G3 server technology with a nice G4. Implementation was to include a low, careful progression of steps, mapping out exactly where things should be, carefully copying things from one machine to another, leaving the G3 in place until completion, testing each piece as I went along, etc. I prepared the G4 by putting in SCSI cards so I could add tape backup, replacing one of the hard drives to a much bigger one, adding some memory, and basically making it a kick ass server. Then I read that Panther Server has a wonderful new feature that allows you to export all of your server settings in one fell swoop. Well gee, I thought....why not upgrade the G3 to panther, then export all of the settings to the G4. What a time saver! Yeah, great idea.

Except for one thing.....upgrading to Panther caused EVERYTHING to stop working. Everything. All virtual hosts were gone. All server administration settings were gone. Attempting to connect to the administration functions failed. Attempting to rebuild the virtual hosts in the web server configurations would not save, and gave a strange dialog box about bugs I should report to Apple. This was all, obviously, not good joss.

After planning ritual sepiku, a much more rational friend told me that perhaps I should just restore the boot disk from the backup I had made the week before. Wow, what a concept! :-) So I prepared to do this by installing a new bootable version of the operating system on another disk, which I would then tell the machine was the boot disk, so I could wipe the original boot disk and bring it up via restore. Well, that didn't work either. Try as I might, the machine outright refused to boot off of any other disk but the boot disk or the CD for the OS, which immediately wants you to install the new OS. I was too tired to fight with it anymore, and was about to just toss it all out the window, when I figured, why not check the G4 and see if it behaves in a rational manner. After all, I could just move most of the files over there in one fell swoop, and cross my fingers, cast a few spells, and see if it works.

It did work. After a few fits and starts, and the time ticking closer and closer to dawn when I turn into a pumpkin, I actually seem to have gotten most things to work. I'm sure it will need some tweaks, and the slow careful configuration I wanted to do is history, but things I think MOSTLY work. Once I wake up, maybe a few more spells will be in order.

Due to Painful Stupidity

Or solar flares, or nose hairs out of joint, or whatever, the newest iteration of my server software broke everything on the old web server, and I've been up most of the night attempting to bring a new webserver online. I have lost approximately one week of postings and comments. I have SOME chance of pulling them out of the bowels of the ancient machine (if I can get the thing back up for more than a few minutes) so I will try that after a brief respite :-).

So Tired of Halloween Bashers

Yet another story this morning, about how Satanic and "dark" Halloween is. If you decide to read it, it's here . Another sickening example of intolerance and discrimination that any non mainstream religion faces. So I sent a letter to the editor of the newspaper. I wonder if it will cause the zealots to come knocking at my door. Here's the letter:

Every Halloween, misinformation abounds regarding the origins of the holiday, its meaning, and whether or not it is "satanic" or has "dark occultic origins." And every year Pagans attempt to correct the misinformation through education and outreach. Unfortunately, stories like yours continue to spread ignorance regarding the holiday, without providing real information that might put minds at ease.

The intolerance displayed by those who were interviewed for this article, while unfortunate, is not surprising. Many churches and church leaders are unaware of what Halloween truly is and what Pagans truly believe. First and foremost, Pagans, Wiccans, and Witches do NOT believe in Satan. Satan is a creation of Christianity. One MUST be a Christian in order to believe in the existence of Satan, let alone worship him. Secondly, saying that "witchcraft is a growing danger" is akin to saying that any other religion besides Christianity is somehow dangerous. On the contrary. The Wiccan Rede followed by most Witches, and our most sacred law provides for consequences if we cause harm to others. Further, Wiccans do not evangelize, as some Christians do. If one chooses the religion of his or her own free will, we assist them in learning about it. Otherwise, there is no need to believe that anyone will attempt to convert members of other religions.

Halloween is the Pagan New Year celebration. As with the more conventional New Years celebrations on January 1, there is no uniform method of celebrating. It was a major holy day, a festival of the ancient Celts. The early Christian Church, rather than attempting to abolish holidays already being celebrated, changed the name from Samhain to Halloween, as it changed Eostre to Easter, Yule to Christmas, etc.

Wicca is a religion that respects the Earth, and all the creatures in it, and sees that all of us are part of the Divine and should be treated as such. To call that "dark" or "devilish" denies those aspects of the Christian religion that forbid passing judgment on others, and require them to "turn the other cheek." Pagans, Wiccans and Witches are not the threat. Intolerance and misinformation are the true threat. Whether people choose to celebrate Samhain, Halloween, Trick or Treat, or whatever else they choose to do on October 31, name-calling or deliberate spreading misinformation is much more against the tenets of Christianity than is allowing those of another belief system to enjoy their New Years.

Bargain of the Day

It's always something, isn't it? This time, it's those crazy spell-casting Hindus

Be warned! Black magic is rife in the Hindu world and evil spells are easy to cast but hard to remove:

Putting a Black magic spell on someone is very easy for those knowing even a little bit of Tantrik siddhis/ voodoo. But to remove the spell and eliminate it's sinister effects needs lot of expertise, continuous & rigorous puja/worship and a combination Siddhis & Sadhna.

But why bother with such a tedious process after some magickal script kiddie has hosed your life? Instead, why not buy a 'Raksha Kavach' for Protection & Cure of Black Magic from godpromise.com?

'Raksha Kavach' is the most powerful Talisman for protection and cure of Black magic. 'Raksha Kavach' eradicates all ill-effects of Black magic, Evil spells, Curses, Ghosts and Spirits. It cures one of evil effects of past attacks and protects one from all future attacks.

The effect of 'Raksha Kavach' never gets reduced. It's protection is life-long, and lasts for as long as it is worn. The moment it is worn, the negative effects start receding and it's protection starts, freeing the wearer from all evil influences which can ruin & destroy one's present and future life.

'Raksha Kavach' is blessed with so much extraordinary energy and power that it can guard and protect an individual against the strongest super-natural forces, negative powers and reverse/break any kind of spell.

The wearer of 'Raksha Kavach' always remains immune from any Black magic attacks.

Not effective against spells for the separation of fools and their money. Does not cure inability to use apostrophes.

George Bush Chosen by God?????

Does this scare anyone else? It certainly scares ME

God has chosen US President George Bush to lead the United States and the fight against 'Satan', according to the general leading the hunt for Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.

It is alleged Lt Gen William Boykin also claimed that the Christian God is "bigger" than Allah, who is a false "idol", the Daily Telegraph reported.

The controversial comments will be seized on by Muslims who will claim the 'war on terror' is a crusade against Islam. [Madville.com]

Hallowe'en banned in Wrexham

I guess only "mainstream faiths" have any rights in England. Is it only a matter of time before it becomes the same over here?

Wrexham Council has banned hallowe'en displays in libraries, and prohhibited hallowe'en related activities in schools after what looks like an orchestrated campaign. The council says it has received a number of complaints but insists they only banned the ancient festival because it doesn't relate to any mainstream faith. Christians who mark All Souls' and All Saints' Day will be surprised. Halloween on the shelf - BBC News, 15th October 2003.

Fijians apologise for ancestors eating English missionary

From Madville.com

Fijian villagers are to offer a traditional apology to the descendants of an English missionary who was killed and eaten 136 years ago.

The Rev Thomas Baker, of the London Missionary Society, was killed by the people of Navatusila in 1867 for taking a comb out of a chief's hair, reports The Pacific Islands News Association.

It was and still is forbidden to touch the head of a chief and he was subsequently cooked and eaten.

The inhabitants of the remote Fiji mountain village believe they have been cursed for what their forefathers did and the district chief has invited Mr Baker's descendants to a ceremony to apologise.

Man murdered over 'stolen' penis

Gambia: A 28-year-old man has been beaten to death after allegations that he used magic to steal another man's penis. Such allegations are common--seven Gambian men were murdered as a result in 1997.

Reports of penis snatching are not uncommon in West Africa, with purported victims claiming that alleged sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear in order to extort cash in the promise of a cure.
The police spokesman said many men in Serekunda were now afraid to shake hands, and he urged people not to believe reports of vanishing genitals. Belief in sorcery is widespread in West Africa.

Happy to be Home

We are happy to be home after a wonderful vacation in Bonaire. Had a fantastic time with the fishies and critters. Now we are back home in Virginia. Just an FYI.

Why is the ocean so cool?

We are often asked why we bother to go through all of the preparation, the packing, the equipment expense, the equipment checking, travel expenses, the difficult air connections, the heat, sweating, bugs, etc. We're also asked why we'd be crazy enough to actually willingly go underwater when there might be evil sharks and other horrible things that might eat us.

After painting this horrible picture of evils and unknown dangers, why in the world would ANYONE want to go on a dive vacation?

Have you ever had a squid decide to check you out? I mean REALLY check you out. As in swim over to you and get closer and closer, until he's TOO close for you to get all of him in the viewfinder. So close that he reaches out with a tentacle and touches your finger to see what you feel like. And so close that they begin mimicking what you're doing so you smile and laugh so hard you flood your mask.

Have you ever seen a frogfish? The look as if they are a part of the scenery until you see a little tiny lure come up and wave off of the sponge. A closer look reveals something that looks like another piece of sponge. Closer still, you see an eye, and a mouth. Since he doesn't know you've spotted him, he doesn't move very much and lets you take his picture.

Have you ever seen a seahorse protected by a crazy damsel fish? As you set up to take the seahorse's picture, the damsel fish flits over and CHOMPS your finger. He protects the seahorse from evil you and your evil flash. So you have to think of ways to outsmart a fish to get your photograph.

How about the way a cleaning shrimp lives inside an anemonie and waits for someone or something to come by, then goes into a little dance to attract your attention and tell you he is "open for business." His antenna twitch and wave around, telling you he wants to clean. If you float just right and move your hand towards him just so, he will float out of the anemonie and onto your hand, where he will clean your fingernails of microscopic plankton he likes to eat.

Have you ever wanted to fly? Just drift above the scenery, moving at will, and feeling you are queen of the universe, above it all, then drifting softly down to get a closer look at a goldentail eel who is searching for lunch.

When a turtle allows you to swim with him, eye to eye, wondering what he is thinking; when a dolphin willingly comes to you in the open ocean and allows you to touch him; when an octopus stops what she is doing to look at you, then blow water at you when you get too close, then you know that it's all worth it.

I have never felt closer to nature and to the earth than when I am underwater with all of the teaming life. It is where the Goddess is most alive and revealed to me. And I would gladly go through all of the hassle and annoyance, just to be close enough to touch her face.

Gay Sex Protection Week

Humor in the face of discrimination

United States: George W. Bush has declared Marriage Protection Week on behalf of insecure married people everywhere, but in a beautiful example of the separation of church and state, it only refers to the Christian model of marriage. Muslims and Mormons, for example, can piss off.

Marriage is a union between a man and a woman, and my Administration is working to support the institution of marriage by helping couples build successful marriages and be good parents.

In response, Nick of morons.org has declared Gay Sex Protection Week:

Gay sex Is a Sacred Institution, and Its Protection Is Essential to the continued strength of our society. Gay Sex Protection Week provides an opportunity to focus our efforts on preserving the sanctity of gay sex and on engaging in hot and wet gay sex in America.

We must support the institution of gay sex and help gays have multiple orgasms. And we must continue our work to create a compassionate, welcoming society, where all people are treated with dignity and respect (unless they're not into that).

During Gay Sex Protection Week, I call on all Americans to join me in expressing support for the institution of gay sex with all its benefits to our porno, our culture, and our society.

But play safe now, and remember to use condoms, dams and other appropriate forms of protection.

Communing with the Sea Goddess

We are in Bonaire for another week. I spent today diving, and playing with squid who are very curious and wonderful creatures. They were quite interested in me, despite making all kinds of noise with all the breathing apparatus we have to use. One even touched me. That was really cool.

We've seen a lot of wonderful creatures thusfar. You can see some of the ones I photographed at this website. Hope you enjoy them.
