What Goes Around Comes Around

A lot of us hear of the Threefold Law, the Law of Return, the "Do Unto Others" law, "Karma is a boomerang" etc., but how many of us really believe it enough to live our lives mindful of it?

A few weeks ago, as I was walking through a parking lot after taking my then pregnant doggie for an X ray (puppy pix here), I found a wallet and turned it in to the manager at the Safeway near to where I found it. At the time, a woman was in line and loudly said that she was so happy to have seen an honest person. Of course, that made me feel pretty good, and I smiled to myself and went along my merry way.

Today, I had a beeeeg pile of packages that I was taking to the post office (thanks to my wonderful Enchanted Works customers) and was overloaded to the max. Who stayed behind to open the door for me? The same woman who was in line at Safeway.

I just thought that was pretty cool

Wiccan Headstone Project

As most people are no doubt aware, various groups have been fighting for YEARS (almost a decade in fact) to have a pentacle put on the headstones of our deceased veterans. Each time anyone tries to do anything about this, they run up against a stone wall. So, I got angry about it and decided to try to figure out what I could do, if anything. Step one was to get information, so I filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the National Cemetery Administration. This morning, I received a huge FedEx box with just about everything I wanted in it.

I have gone over the over 250 pages of information provided by the National Cemetery Administration as a result of my FOIA, in documents dating back to 1996. My findings are quite disturbing. During time periods when some groups were told that regulations were being promulgated, other groups' requests for Emblems of Belief were being approved. Further, some groups were granted Emblems without having filled requirements stated as necessary to other groups.

By far, the largest number of requests for an Emblem of Belief were from the Wiccan/Pagan community. Over half of the paperwork provided was from or on behalf of Wiccans or Pagans, asking for the pentacle emblem. None of them have been approved, despite the oldest having been provided in 1997, and despite all required information, as outlined in Response 2 below, having been received by the Administration. More disturbing, perhaps, is that repeated requests from one group, the Pagan Headstone Campaign, for in person meetings were denied, despite letters provided to me that referenced meetings that took place between other groups and the Administration.

In my research I found variations of three different responses that were sent as a result of inquiries regarding Emblems of Belief. They are as follows:

Response 1 - "...We are reviewing the information and expect to make a decision within the next 30 to 45 days. A decision letter will be sent to you at that time...” The one was most disturbing, as there were NO decision letters included in my FOIA request. However, there were several "memos" included in which OTHER groups who did not receive such letters stipulating this waiting period, were immediately approved.

Response 2 - "...In order for us to make a determination to include the Wiccan emblem on VA’s approved list [redacted] should provide the following information: A Written request to include the Wiccan emblem, signed by the recognized head of the organization

A brief description of the organization, with specific information to include national officers, number of chapters, the total number of members and years of operation in the United States and affiliation with other organizations,

A 3 inch high reproducible camera-ready copy of the Wiccan emblem so that our contractors can determine if the emblem can be reproduced clearly and easily on a headstone or marker in a production-line environment...”

Response 3 - “...our response to these letters is pending until we obtain approval on new policy guidelines...” This response was provided at various times, from as far back as 1999. However, these "policy guidelines" appear to be a moving target at best, with some groups receiving preferential treatment.

Here is a breakdown of organizations and individuals (most submitted through their Senators or Congressmen) and the dates of request for the Wiccan Emblem of Belief:

The first request that I have access to was from August 27, 1997 – The Aquarian Tabernacle church of Washington, State. No response was given until November 27, 2001 which consisted of Response #1. They wrote again in December of 2003, with no response. April 22, 2005 they wrote again, still no response was provided in my FOIA request.

Temple and Lyceum of Isis Fortuna 2/99 INCLUDING all information requested in Response 2. They received Response 3 7/29/99

Nomadic chantry of the Gramarye – 9/9/04 INCLUDING all information requested in Response 2. They received Response 3 5/25/05

Church of Ancient Paths 7/22/04 Declined because they said “there is and can be, no ‘recognized head’ to the religion of Wicca.” This was the only mention of a request being declined.

Correllian Nativist Church, International 1/4/05 INCLUDING all information requested in Response 2. (This was after they specifically telephoned the National Cemetery Administration asking for the current rules regarding approval and were given the guidelines in Response 2, which were complied with to the letter.) They then received Response 3 5/25/05

Circle Sanctuary 4/8/05 INCLUDING all information requested in Response 2 [Response 3] 5/9/05

Individual requests were dated from 12/.03 until 4/05 from the following Senators and Congressmen:

Senator Grassley
Senator Leahy
Senator Inouye
Congressman Jenkins
Senator Cantwell
Senator Sarbanes
Congressman Brady
Congressman Vitter
Congressman Snyder
Congressman Case

Meantime, during this time period, symbols were approved on behalf of the following groups:

Christian and Missionary Alliance 7/02
United Church of Christ 6/13/03
Presbyterian Church, 10/9/03
Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii 3/04
Soka Gakkai Buddhist Symbol 4/21/04
Sikh Symbol 5/25/04
American Humanist Association (exact date unknown)
Muslim Star and Crescent (exact date unknown)

This has gone on long enough. The sheer number of requests from individuals and churches should have created a favorable response back in 1997 when the first request was made. Please, investigate this issue and get us some kind of resolution before another Wiccan veteran is denied the symbol of their religion after having given their lives for their country.

Who knows if this will do any good at this point, but I'm feeling better just by trying.

The Solidarity of London

It is amazing that the City of London, at 12 noon their time, came to a complete halt and stood as one, in silence, in tribute to the 50+ people who were killed. Many in Europe stood with them. Thousands stand in line to sign the book of condolences. In 25 countries, citizens stood in defiance to terrorism. The resolve is close to universal.

So what went wrong? One of the bombers was married with a child, and worked as a teacher's aide in elementary school. All were British. Why? To me it just goes to show that religious extremism in ANY form is dangerous. It has been used to induce suicides, murders, rapes, assaults, and more. It is frightening to watch those who are obviously under the influence of extremists. They act and speak as one, with no individuality, no independent thought, and are willing to lay down their lives at a moment's notice. This phenomenon is not limited to Islamic extremists, either. We've seen it in extremists of all flavors

And why the difference in reactions? In London, the emphasis was on defiance, and getting back to normal life as soon as possible. In New York, it was how we could "get them back" and a scramble for immediate draconian legislation that would curtail our freedoms.

Although I am certain that Parliament will likely be plagued with those who will try to limit British civil liberties in a failed attempt to exchange freedom for security (which gives you neither, of course), I have a feeling that the Brits will be a bit smarter than we were about this. Perhaps it is because of their history with IRA terrorism, or perhaps it is because their politicians are not as concerned with control as ours are. For whatever reason, it will be something to watch.

Self-Proclaimed 'Messiah' to Appeal After Judge Finds for 'Queen'

Just goes to show you that even the "Son of God" has to deal with earthly court :-)

Self-Proclaimed 'Messiah' to Appeal After Judge Finds for 'Queen': "Self-proclaimed 'son of god' Michael Anthony Wayne is appealing now that his would-be 'queen' has won back title to the house in which the couple lived. Former California police sergeant Nancy Clayton says she gave up her career, moved to Florida and gave thousands of dollars to Wayne, who said he would preside over the world's destruction. As he issued a ruling in Clayton's favor, the judge said from the bench, 'I don't see people like you all that often in here.'"

Ten Days With Puppies

Puppies, puppies everywhere. What do you do? They're so cute, and they're getting bigger and bigger, and BIGGER and BIGGER and eating and eating and driving poor mommy insane.

They are doing so well they're keeping us awake at night. Nobody's eyes are open yet. Looks like we have four puffs and 1 hairless. Strange ratio, but what can you do?

They all seem very healthy and very happy. As long as mommy is in the box with them. Once mommy leaves, the fun is over, however, and we have a lot of yelping and whining.

Bargain of the Day: Karma Guard

Bargain of the Day: Karma Guard: "

Bad karma is a terrible thing, but you can absolve yourself of responsibility for your actions by investing just $7(US) in a bottle of Karma Guard:

Karma Guard will cleanse your soul and clear the air with a single spray. It contains purified water and wild Ginseng root, the same Ginseng that has been used by spiritual masters for over 2000 years for its spiritually enhancing qualities, one of which hastens the burning up or cleansing of Karma. Throw it in your purse, keep it on your desk, stick in your beach bag or workout bag, or right there on your nightstand — anywhere that bad Karma can strike.

Or you can buy it on eBay (for a bargain $29.99), and get a much more exciting description:

What is it? It’s a spray, it’s a shield, it’s a badge of awareness … it’s KARMA GUARD! Just when you thought it was safe to trash, bad mouth and dis, comes the antidote for any evil thought you may have. As you feel those nasty words leaving yours or someone else’s lips, whip out the bottle with the shield and remember: Just one spray keeps the bad Karma away. Karma Guard will cleanse your soul and clear the air. It contains purified water and wild Ginseng root; the same Ginseng that has been used by spiritual masters for over 2000 years for it’s spiritually enhancing qualities, one of which hastens the burning up or cleansing of Karma. So as the light scented mist of Karma Guard sprays across your face, it makes you stop and think … whoa, that was bad, bad, bad, bad, bad! Let the contents within this hallowed bottle put your smile back on and remind you of what good feels like. Throw it in your purse, keep it on your desk, stick in your beach bag or workout bag, or right there on your nightstand — anywhere that bad Karma can strike. Karma Guard was first conceived of 20 years ago by two hit songwriters, Andy Goldmark and Bruce Roberts, responsible for mega- records by Jessica Simpson, Cher, N’Sync, Celine Dion, Elton John, Barbra Streisand to name a few. They realized that thriving in the treacherous waters of the music business necessitated some kind of protection for one’s soul in order to survive with anything resembling a conscience, much less a shred of decency. What started out as a running joke between them, soon evolved into a tool of awareness. Even though the Karma Guard bottle and design would not spring into being until now, the concept was alive and well particularly when they or anyone around them acted with a severe lack of ethics, morals or the slightest regard for anything that was obnoxious. Just verbalizing the need for Karma Guard in any given situation was enough to summon it’s power and invoke a Karmic righting of wrong, if only imagined at the moment. It took a little time but these two guys realized that being as civilization was going to hell in a go-cart, they might as well try to save it or at least create a thought provoking detour… AND NOW-- Here it is - the ultimate road tested remedy for the Universe’s biggest, baddest boomerang - - out in time to keep you somewhat honest, partially decent but definitely mo’ better than you were before. So remember, be good to your Karma and it will be good to you. And a little spray along the way won’t hurt either… Karma Guard! You say they don't carry it on the Wal-Mart near you? Hard to believe; but this IS your lucky day! For the first time ever on eBay-- and straight from the the creators themselves-- the Ari Bhod auction for the preservation of Tibetan cultural heritage is making this available in any town in the world where Wal-Mart or Target hasn't stocked it yet. And whether you're Dick Cheney or a high lama we're starting it a price someone with PERFECT karma or less than perfect karma can afford. And no reserve. PAYMENT: PayPal or money order

How to Become a Witch in Nine Easy Lessons

This is rather cute :-)

How to Become a Witch in Nine Easy Lessons: "In the 1980's it was fashionable to be interested in the New Age. This is now a dreadful faux pas within the alternative scene, and in order to be accepted in the 1990's metaphysical social set, one must have an interest in Witchcraft or Paganism. Of course, you don't have to actually belong to a coven in order to be thought of as a Witch; you can bluff your way into being accepted as a fully fledged Witch by knowing a few terms and dressing accordingly. This brings us to...

Rule #1: Image Is Everything. After all, what's the good of being a Witch if nobody knows you are one? You must therefore wear black at all times. If possible, stay out of the sun until you become really pale, as this makes the effect even better. For women (and adventurous males), dark eyeliner and black nail polish can enhance this look. Also wear crystals and cheap occult paraphernalia at all times, and make sure that these are as gaudy and bizarre as possible, as this can only help your image."

Which Prison Chaplain Is Witch?

Typical happy fun knee jerk reaction....

Which Prison Chaplain Is Witch?: "By Steve Chapman Republicans do not normally wear themselves out worrying about how to keep prison inmates happy. But GOP State Rep. Scott Walker of Wisconsin firmly sides with any convicts who may not like the new chaplain at the Waupun Correctional Institution. The reverend is a real witch, and we're not talking about her personality. No, Jamyi Witch is a minister of Wicca, a neo-pagan faith based on the worship of nature. She changed her last name from Welch to fit her adoptive religion -- whose practitioners are known as witches despite what appears to be no special enthusiasm for brooms or pointed black hats."

Happy Fun New Puppies

spaymenowsm.jpg

After a slight scare, five puppies came into the world late last night and early this morning. The festivities started at 10:00 when Talia started acting really strangely, running in circles, whining, etc. She refused to use the whelping box until it was put on the bed. Somehow, I knew that she would wind up having the pups in our bed :-). First baby was out at about 10:30. Second at 11:33. Third at 2:52. The length of time was worrying, so I woke up the poor breeder friend who got us our cresteds to ask whether it was ok, he said sure, and he was right. Fourth puppy at 3:55, and 5th followed right after at 4:13 am.

Yep, we thought there were 6. Apparently, reading X rays is not an exact science. So when 8 am rolled around, with no puppy, I called the breeder again and he said this was a big problem, so I should take her in. Off to the clinic we went, Talia and puppies in hand, as it were. The amazing animal birthing expert doctor took a x ray which showed nada was left inside. So they did the normal post birth maintenance stuff, and home we went where both me and mom took a nice long nap.

We're not sure how many of the kids are hairless and which have hair. Three boys, two girls, one definite hairless boy (a baby Calvin). And all should be well :-).
