Putting the "Mental" back in Fundamentalism

CJAD 800 : News:

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran's hard line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned on Tuesday Iran would "cut the hand of any aggressor" and insisted the country's military had to be ready with the most modern technology.
"Today, you are among the world's most powerful armies because you rely on God," Ahmadinejad declared at a parade to commemorate Army Day. "Iran's enemies know your courage, faith and commitment to Islam and the land of Iran has created a powerful army that can powerfully defend the political borders and the integrity of the Iranian nation and cut the hand of any aggressor and place the sign of disgrace on their forehead," Ahmadinejad said.

Gee, I wonder if we can ask for similar disclaimers...

Perhaps we should start asking for disclaimers about portrayal of Witches as "evil" as in Nardia, and other popular movies.

Opus Dei Asks for 'Da Vinci' Disclaimer - Yahoo! News:

ROME - The conservative religious group Opus Dei has asked for a disclaimer on the upcoming film based on the best-selling novel "The Da Vinci Code."

Opus Dei, portrayed as a murderous, power-hungry sect in the novel by Dan Brown, wrote in an April 6 letter to Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news). that a disclaimer would show respect to Jesus and to the Catholic Church.

"Any such decision by Sony would be a gesture of respect toward the figure of Jesus, to the history of the Church and to the religious beliefs of viewers," Opus Dei wrote in the letter, which was posted on its Italian Web site.

"The Da Vinci Code" contends that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had descendants, and that Opus Dei and the Catholic Church were at the center of a cover up.

If this is true, I hope they do something about it

KRT Wire | 04/15/2006 | Mass whale deaths tied to U.S. Navy sonar, report says:

TOKYO - The U.S. Navy's deployment of active sonar to detect submarine activity is believed to have been responsible for at least six incidents of mass death and unusual behavior among pods of whales in the last 10 years, according to a recent U.S. Congressional Research Service report.

In one of the most serious incidents, 150 to 200 melon-headed whales were observed milling in Hanalei Bay off Hawaii's Kauai Island during a Rim of the Pacific Exercise on July 3, 2004, after midfrequency sonar was used, the CRS report said.

Known as RIMPAC, the naval exercise included the participation of Japan and other U.S. allies in Asia and the Pacific.

The CRS report also listed five other incidents in which smaller whales, such as goose-beaked whales, harbor porpoises and killer whales, were found beached and dead in groups of a few to nearly 20. Many of the dead mammals had damaged hearing organs, and all five incidents coincided with U.S. naval exercises in the areas, the report said.

In Today's "Get a Life" Series...

If one fanatic can get an entire series of books banned from schools, we are in quite serious trouble. I bet that those very same libraries carry the Bible, and hopefully the Koran and other Holy books. Yet, there are generally not many protests about those. However, a book of fiction? I wonder why she isn't protesting Nardia eh?

Georgia Woman Wants Harry Potter Books Removed From Schools:

Laura Mallory has three children who attend J.C. Magill Elementary School in Loganville, Georgia. She is asking the school board to remove the popular series from libraries in the state's largest school system.

The mother of four says she has not read any of the Potter books in their entirety, but she says she has read portions of the books, which she says glorify witchcraft.

This is utterly priceless

Post-Rapture Post:

United States: While most people are pondering ways to repel the annoyingly over righteous from their doorsteps at the crack of dawn, a couple of lads from Idaho saw an opportunity in taking advantage of the superstitions of others.

Noticing that the wacky American fairy tale of the Rapture was getting wide notice from many unthinking cult members, they decided to set up a service called Post-Rapture Post that allows the gullible to pay a fee to have a personal I told you so letter hand-delivered to their non-cult member friends and family who have been left behind.

Just write your letter and it will be hand-delivered immediately following the exodus of the pure from the Earth. But you must be thinking to yourself, How can the letters be delivered after the Rapture? The answer is simple. The creators of this site are Atheists. That's right, we don't believe in God. How else would we be able to deliver your correspondence after the Rapture?

Pure genius.

Missing Link?

CNN.com - Fossil connects human evolution dots - Apr 12, 2006:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The latest fossil unearthed from a human ancestral hot spot in Africa allows scientists to link together the most complete chain of human evolution so far.

The 4.2 million-year-old fossil discovered in northeastern Ethiopia helps scientists fill in the gaps of how human ancestors made the giant leap from one species to another.

That's because the newest fossil, the species Australopithecus anamensis, was found in the region of the Middle Awash -- where seven other human-like species spanning nearly 6 million years and three major phases of human development were previously discovered.

"We just found the chain of evolution, the continuity through time," study co-author and Ethiopian anthropologist Berhane Asfaw said in a phone interview from Addis Ababa. "One form evolved to another. This is evidence of evolution in one place through time."

The findings were reported Thursday in the scientific journal Nature.

Video of ME on TV... oh boy

Audio and video of Daddy O's TV program starring ME... well, starring him WITH me, but there you go. Are you having exquisite amounts of fun yet? I certainly am. Before you screech too much, this is public access television. You know, like Wayne's World :-)

Podcast For Wiccan Headstone Campaign

When I was in NH a few weeks ago, I was invited to be on my dad's public access TV show to speak about the Wiccan Headstone Campaign. Now, feel free to be as picky as you like, but please remember - being on television and babbling for 1/2 an hour is difficult enough, but imagine doing that with YOUR FATHER. Oh the fun.

Formal Training In Wicca

Author: Jenny Schumaker [a WitchVox Sponsor]

When I first set out to learn Wicca a few years ago (OK, so now it's closer to ten years than to one, that doesn't mean I'm getting old or anything, and I'm NOT at all sensitive about it) I imagine my experience in formal training would have been seen as very, very strange, but perhaps not so much now.

Like most people I grabbed a book, and then another. I was lucky in my choices—I started with “Drawing Down the Moon” and went next to “Spiral Dance.” I was lucky enough to have Witchy friends who held circles and were willing to include me in their group. And I was lucky enough to find a little place on the internet (with which I was just starting to get familiar) that offered training in a tradition and that was entirely online. Huh? An online coven? If I recall, there was an episode of “Buffy” from way back, where Giles had the hots for a teacher who was a cyber-Pagan, and I remember asking a friend “What the heck is a cyber-Pagan? How silly is that??”

I Think I Need To Make a Clarification

My annoyance at the person who posted on the Interfaith list yesterday had nothing to do with the fact that he wished blessings from his Deity upon the project. Really! I have no problem with Christianity as such, or with any other religious belief or preference (so long as it doesn't attempt to impose itself on me). I don't view a blessing from another, a prayer, a "happy [fill in holiday here]," or any other type of well wishing, religious or not, as anything I should be offended by. It comes from their hearts. For all I know, they are bestowing upon me, the highest honor that they can think of; asking their Deity to bless me, a stranger, usually for a kindness, or even just because I exist in their world.

As illustration, when I was flying to NH, I received the special bonus prize of extra screening. Flight had been booked only hours before. I was flying without baggage, unaccompanied, and one way. Top it off, I was flying out of Washington National airport. They went all through my stuff, as usual, put me through the little puff chamber thing, etc. etc. One of the TSA officers asked me why I was flying one way. I told him that I had to get to Manchester because my mother was about to undergo surgery, it was serious, and I needed to be there. He asked me whether or not she would accept prayers. I was touched. This man who had never met me, sees me in connection with his job, and could have treated me like "just another passenger" instead offered prayers for my mother. I thought that was a wonderfully warm and human gesture, regardless of which Deity he will ultimately pray to on her behalf. I thanked him profusely and told him that indeed she would, and I appreciated it very much.

That little gesture out of this man's heart COULD have been treated with disdain. "What KIND of prayers" or "to WHAT God" or whatever, could have been thrown back in his face had I been a person who saw offense where the opposite was intended. But I truly feel that every little bit helps, and if his Deity, whichever that may be, sees fit to bless my mother and help her healing, I offer thanks, regardless of who that Deity is.

What I was upset by, and will always be upset by, is the assumption that I did not choose my religion with care and knowledge, and that I, or others, should instead convert to their religion. The wish that all, or members of a certain group, or individuals who are strangers, should blindly follow your path is something that is so alien and offensive to me, because it makes certain assumptions that I don't appreciate. The first is that "one size fits all." Not every religion is appropriate for each person. Second is the assumption that this person somehow knows better than you do what's best for your spiritual well being. Third is the idea that their religion is somehow "Truth" (capital T intentional) and yours is.... well.... not truth. Therefore, they are "here to help you." Gee, thanks :-).

So anyway, my point here is that I'm certainly not upset when others ask for their Deity(s)' blessing on me or mine. I DO, however, get upset when they advocate mass conversion to their religion.

April 06, 2006

So there I was, minding my own business...when....

I was on this Interfaith list, when someone mentioned that they were starting meetings to make prayer shawls in groups, for individuals who might need some extra help. Sounded like an interesting project, where people would stitch intentions and prayers and then give the item to the recipient. So, people started commenting on this, and what a great idea it was, wishing them well, etc. Then came this message:

I will keep you in my daily prayer's that you prayer ministry will be blessed by the Father and though your ministry many will be blessed and come to meet the Lord as there savior.

Now, ignoring the fact that this person's English skills need a lot of work, how would you feel if you were a Wiccan group doing this, and this person came along wishing that all of the people you were helping would be converted to his religion? INTERfaith implies that people of MANY faiths participate. Yet this person either assumed that his religion was the only one represented, or worse, knew that it was a group of many, and just decided to interject his own bulldozer type approach at conversion.

So why can't people respect the chosen belief systems of others? If you can answer that question, you should be the head of an Interfaith group :-)

Darwin Fish Found! :-)

Harvard Gazette: Missing link crawls out of muck:

Paleontologists have discovered fossils of a species that provides the missing evolutionary link between fish and the first animals that walked out of water onto land about 375 million years ago. The newly found species, Tiktaalik roseae, has a skull, a neck, ribs, and parts of the limbs that are similar to four-legged animals known as tetrapods, as well as fishlike features such as a primitive jaw, fins, and scales.

These fossils, found on Ellesmere Island in Arctic Canada, are the most compelling examples yet of an animal that was at the cusp of the fish-tetrapod transition. The new find is described by scientists at Harvard University, the University of Chicago, and the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia in two related research articles highlighted on the cover of the April 6 issue of Nature.

"This previously unknown, extinct animal represents the beginning of the emergence of fish onto land, and the evolutionary transformation of fins into limbs," says Farish A. Jenkins Jr., Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology at Harvard and curator of mammalogy and vertebrate paleontology at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology. "The skeletal material is three-dimensional and exquisitely preserved; most material this old tends to be flattened or otherwise distorted. The geometry of the limb joints clearly indicates that segments of the fin could move independently. The 'shoulder' and 'elbow' could flex, and the 'wrist' could extend, converting the fin into postures appropriate to support the body from below and propel the animal on land."

How Many More Schools Do This Stuff?

firstamendmentcenter.org: news:

DE VALLS BLUFF, Ark. — A federal appeals court has sided with a former teacher who complained about prayers at a graduation ceremony in an eastern Arkansas school district.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday ruled in favor of Steve Warnock in his dispute with the DeValls School District, but didn't grant Warnock's request that the penalties against the district be stiffened.

Warnock sued the district in 1999, saying he was discriminated against as a teacher in the DeValls Bluff school system because he is not a Christian. In the lawsuit, he also said administrators were imposing Christianity in the school setting, including by reading Bible passages over the intercom.

In earlier rulings, courts found partly in Warnock's favor.

The three-judge panel of the appeals court wrote yesterday in Warnock v. Archer that an injunction prevented the school district from orchestrating or supervising prayers at school graduation or baccalaureate ceremonies.

Warnock complained that a May 11, 2004, baccalaureate ceremony included invocations by ministers. A federal district judge ordered the school district to pay all of Warnock's fees and costs associated with the complaint.

The appeals court upheld the lower court ruling and rejected arguments that the graduation ceremony was a student-organized event. The court said evidence showed that school employees were involved with almost every aspect of the service's preparation.

But the appeals court said it wouldn't put more penalties on the district.

Last year, a federal jury ruled that Warnock had failed to show he was fired by the district because of his complaints of religious discrimination and Christian prayer.

CNN.com - Pyramid presents religious quandary for suburban Mexicans - Apr 5, 2006:

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- Archeologists said Wednesday they have discovered a massive 6th-century Indian pyramid beneath the site of a centuries-old re-enactment of the crucifixion of Christ.

Built on a hillside by the mysterious Teotihuacan culture, the pyramid was abandoned almost 1,000 years before Catholics began re-enacting the crucifixion there in the 1800s, unaware they were celebrating one of the holiest moments of their faith on a site originally dedicated to gods of earth, wind and rain.

While residents around the hillside in Iztapalapa, on the east side of Mexico City, express pride at the discovery, it illustrates the difficulty of preserving the many layers of Mexican history: archaeologists have decided not to fully excavate the site so as to avoid disturbing the Christian rites.

ANSA.it - News in English - Italians find ancient Ur tablets

ANSA.it - News in English - Italians find ancient Ur tablets:

Writings could lead to buried library (ANSA) - Rome, March 28 - Italian archeologists working in Iraq have found a trove of ancient stone tablets from the fabled civilisation of Ur .

The tablets bear around 500 engravings of a literary and historical nature, according to team leader Silvia Chiodi .

"This is an an exceptional find," she said, noting that the area in question had previously only yielded prehistoric artefacts .

She said the tablets, made of clay and bitumen, were discovered by chance at an archaeological site not far from the location of the ancient city .

"I was looking for a wall structure spotted by an airborne photo when I spotted a small inscription on bitumen and then realised it wasn't the only one" .

An expert on Sumerian civilisation, Giovanni Pettinato, said the finds probably dated back to one of Ur's most prosperous periods .

"The most surprising thing is the time span the tablets cover, ranging from 2,700 BCE, the First Dynasty of Ur, to 2,100 BCE, the Third Dynasty," Pettinato said .

"The place where the tablets were found, not far from the surface, leads one to suppose they contain information from a library," he said .

"There could be thousands of them down there" .

Chiodi said the tablets would probably occupy a prominent place in a new Virtual Museum of Iraq which Italy is building to show people what Baghdad's celebrated museum of antiquities looked like before it was looted in the wake of the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq .

About a half of 40 star attractions of the museum have yet to be retrieved .

Of the 15,000 items taken from storeooms, 8,000 have not been returned despite an amnesty .

Ur, near the southern Iraqi city of Nassiriya, is cited in the Bible as the birthplace of the prophet Abraham .

It was the religious hub of Sumerian civilisation at the start of a series of dynasties that ruled Mesopotamia from around 4000 BCE .

Long before the Egyptians, the Sumerians invented the wheel and developed the first mathematical system .

The most famous classic of ancient literature, Gilgamesh, was written at Ur .

The most prominent monument at the site is the best preserved ziggurat, or stepped pyramid, in the Arab world .

It was built by the Sumerians around 4000 BCE and restored by Nebuchadnezzar in the sixth century BCE .
